Skelmersdale United 1 Glossop North End 1. Sat 11th October 2003.

Levelled out by the Hillmen!

United should’ve won this game at a canter, but poor finishing kept Skem at bay.

Stuart Rudd almost opened the scoring within the first 30 seconds of the game. Rudd dropped his shoulder and turned the defender, but the keeper parried his shot to safety. 3 minutes later Mike Heverin was put in the clear following a quickly taken goal kick by Robbie Holcroft, but one-on-one with the keeper Heverin screwed his shot disappointingly wide of the target. Tony Morton blasted a good shot high in the 17th minute from 20-yards. Soon after Michael Cole’s shot was somewhat gingerly collected by the keeper.

It was all one-way traffic until the 22nd minute when Glossop forced a corner. Nick Wild headed the ball into the back of the net as a result, but as the lads returned to the half-way line in celebration, the referee had already blown for a foul on Robbie Holcroft. Almost immediately Mike Heverin was in the clear again, but once again he somehow contrived to put the ball high and wide, when it looked easier to score. Heverin had an even easier chance 4 minutes later following a precision cross by Cole; but this time he scuffed his shot wide.

The keeper blocked an Ossie 20-yarder in the 31st minute, and in much similar circumstances following a sole run by Jay McKane, the keeper was forced into palming away a much stronger shot.

United continued to force the pressure in the second half with a trio of opportunities. In the 47th minute Mike Heverin spurned another chance following a defensive error, but this time put the ball into the side netting, when he really should’ve done better. Gareth Evans scuffed 18-yarder went wide & Heverin’s shot was smothered by the keeper; all in the space of 60 seconds.

Glossop occasionally penetrated United’s half, but the defence was holding up well with David Standley having a particularly good game.

Steve Tobin’s 56th minute cross found the head of Rudd, but the keeper somehow managed to get tip the ball over the crossbar.

David Dugdale replaced Mike Heverin in the 60th minute, and within 2 minutes had struck the upright, following an excellent through ball by Michael Cole.

United had kept clean sheets against the might of Newcastle & Warrington Town, so it seemed rather inevitable that they would concede to basement club Glossop, a team which had struggled to score 9 in 14 outings. In the 64th minute Glossop won a corner, and their failure to clear competently at the near post resulted in the ball rolling freely to Daly Clarke; and totally unmarked he fired the ball home.

I suppose United’s heads could’ve gone down totally following a major reverse in fortunes, but give them their due they carried on fighting. That fight led to the equaliser in the 83rd minute, as Dave Dugdale fired Stuart Rudd’s cross into the roof of the net from close range.

Cole & Tobin had half efforts in the closing stages, but United had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Website Man of the Match.

David Standley.

A resolute defensive performance by David Standley.

The Final Word.

This was a very frustrating game to watch; again highlighted by the many chances that we squandered. Many people will state that it was an inspired performance by their keeper that kept us at bay, but that kind of talk only grout’s the cracks. If you shoot at a keeper the chances are that he will save the efforts. So in my estimation we made the keeper look good with poor fire power.

United had over a dozen good chances to bury Glossop, but it was super-sub Dave Dugdale that eventually breached the Glossop defence. He only had two opportunities; the 1st hit the upright & the second hit the back of the net. Surely he deserves the chance to start a game?

Nevertheless, United are now unbeaten in 5 games.
