Subject: Tiger Lillies Tour Rider

Hi Ihr Lieben!

*******************************************************
Technical Requirements

Audio System and Lighting Specification.

Audio spec provided by Roland Higham

The Tiger Lillies are a three piece acoustic band.

Please provide a baby grand piano, two chairs without arms and a smoke machine (with remote) for all concerts, notify our booking agent a.s.a.p. if there is any problem with these requirement.

Martyn Jacques - Vocals, Accordion, Ukulele, Piano

Adrian Huge - Vocals, Childs drum kit and assorted plastic, wooden and other objects

Adrian Stout - Vocals, Upright Bass and Singing Saw

On stage set up (front)

The band sets up in a diamond formation, with Martyn at the front and the two Adrians set slightly behind, on stage left and right. Piano to be set behind the center vocal position.

The band will provide a pre-show cd of suitable music to the venue.

General System notes

The band do not travel with any crew, please provide sound and light techs.

Please ensure that all PA systems and lights are installed, set-up and tested two hours before the band arrives to ensure a quick, low stress soundcheck. Soundchecks should take no more than 1 hour.

The band is not loud, but detailed sound is important; think more of Jazz than Rock & Roll. So a good quality PA with high definition is required.

Martyn uses a wide dynamic range so the PA must be capable of comfortably reproducing vocal transients in excess of 105dBA.

As there are only two tuned instruments played at any one time and one of these is an upright bass, the system must be capable of comfortably reproducing frequencies down to 40Hz.

No backline required, all instruments to go through PA and wedges.

Microphones & DIs

* 2 SM/Beta 58 vocal mics one for Martyn's main vocal, centre stage, the other positioned for Martyn when he plays the piano.
* 2 SM/Beta 58 or similar vocal mics for Adrian (bass vocal) and Adrian (drums vocal).
* 2 x DI boxes, preferably BSS for the accordion and bass as each have good internal pick-ups. 2 X 1/4 inch mono jack to jack intrument cables (6 m length).
* 2 x small/medium diaphragm condensor cardioids for drum overhead (e.g. AKG451/CK1 or SE300/CK91, Neumann KM100 or KM84, etc.)
* 1 x SM57 for ukulele.
* 1 x small/medium diaphragm condensor cardioid for piano overhead. Alternatively PZMs or C-ducers can be used for the piano
* 1 x SM58 or Beyer M88 for the kick drum which just sits on the wadding inside the 15" tom that is usually used as the kick drum.
* 1 x SM/Beta57 for Hi-hat & snare
* All microphone stands must be boom stands. It is impossible to get close to a straight stand with an accordion strapped to your chest.

Monitors
4 x 12" & HF wedges fed from three mixes. One for each performer on the front line plus one for Martyn at the piano fed from the same mix as his front line monitor.

Processing
A good quality reverb unit is required. Something like a Yamaha SPX900, Lexicon LXP15 or PCM range unit.
Sufficient system equalisation and processing to make it sound good!
Gentle compression on the main vocal can be very useful but isn't essential.

Lighting Plan

click on the plan to get hi-res printable version
*The 6 birdies indicated are no longer carried by the band, please provide some form of uplighting eg 3 floor cans or birdies if poss.

The band would prefer a black floor.

The Tiger Lillies lighting should be kept simple. The colour washes together with the three spots from the front should be regarded as the minimum requirements. The show should be operated manually, using slow crossfades and no chases. Generally lower levels are much more effective. The specials should all be tight focussed to the performers with soft edges. The Tiger Lillies require mood lighting, with the colour washes enhanced by use of the specials from the front, behind and the floor. The general tempo and instrumentation of the numbers should dictate the use of colour for the general stage lighting levels and choice of specials.

The lighting of the show should evoke 1930's cabaret, expressionist film, theater, so dramatic shadows and high contrast are encouraged. Please try and avoid modern lighting effects (varilights, lasers, computer anything).

Haze and smoke effects are particularly suited to the Tiger Lillies style, but should only be used in consultation with the band. The four profiles behind the band (marked with "G" on the plan) should have a sharp break-up gobo of some sort focussed to cover the performing area, and used to enhance the colour washes, and to create a more effective stage picture.

The floor lights up-light the faces of Adrian Stout (Bass) and Martyn Jacques (accordion) from their left hand side - they have their instruments on the right hand side. The up-light for Adrian Huge (Drums) should be used to light the drum kit and the assorted percussion instruments rather than his face. Keep alert either Adrian could need to be lit at any time, lots of little things go on during the show in addition to the main focus of Martyn singing.

The show requires some concentration to operate, but with simple colour changes and careful use of the specials an effective result can be achieved quite easily.

Stage management and show times

The Tiger Lillies play 2 sets of 45 minutes each (90 minutes in total). Please notify the band 30 minutes, 10 minutes and 5 minutes before the concert. At the start of the show, drop house lights and have somone make a small introduction through the PA such as

"Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome The Tiger Lillies"

This will also serve as the cue for the band to enter the stage. The band will play 45 minutes and then take a 20 minute break.

After the break please make a second announcement,

"Ladies and Gentleman, please welcome back, The Tiger Lillies"

which will be the cue for the band to enter the stage again.
The band will play another 45 minutes. Once the band has finished playing they will proceed to the foyer to sign CD's, please make the announcement

"The Tiger Lillies will be signing CD's in the foyer."

Transport Requirements:

The Tiger Lillies travel with 6 pieces of luggage (2 large suitcases for the drums, 1 accordion in a flight case, a travel double bass in a hard golf club case and two personal bags). Please arrange collection to and from the airport to venue/hotel. The minimum size of vehicle required is an 8 seater people carrier, or large estate/combi/station wagon able to fit the luggage and 3 band members plus driver.
