This has been a fascinating read, and disturbing. It's really, really questionable how some of you claim that the music is all that matters, so who cares if a station is tracked or live? Will you still say that when your own gig is slashed by your corporate Big Brothers and happily go home and string your cans and fishing line together and just pretend?

Radio can be saved, but those who own it now don't realize they are driving the discerning listener away and to the internet, cable TV or their CD players. How sad! And as for those of you who claim that it's too expensive to hire an on-air staff, why was it not too expensive to have them in "the old days," which were not that long ago, really? If it's all about money, then why don't you guys just run Mercedes-Benz infomercials 24/7/365 and see how many of your ritzy audience stay tuned? All for the money and no more on-air people needed, except to occasionally adjust the DC player's laser and pay the power company.

I suspect the corporate conglomerates started the SARS epidemic because after all, who needs people? By the way, when are they going to automate the PDs and the sales forces too? Wouldn't you love to have androids soliciting you to buy radio advertising from them? Don'tcomputers make fantastic DJs too? Gee, I was even considering becoming an automated listener. Why don't they just automate the news and the world events as well? Make the whole world a great big ride at Euro Disney, where we are all controlled by an off-on button and listen to eternally looped broadcasting?
And how contradictory is it that programmers play varying ads to constantly changing audeince demographics, knowing that people and their tastes and listening habits change, yet they seek to automate stations as though people prefer automated concepts to live radio with the appeal and personality of DJs sharing their humor and opinions and informnation with us as the world turns and changes? Beware whenever you hear someone referring to a program. It sounds so digital...I listen for a SHOW! And by the way, if it was all about the music then why did anyone ever listen to radio? Why didn't people just play their records at home, 8-tracks in thier cars and screw having radios? Oh yeah. Androids can't drive, and they needed someone to get them those cartridges off the shelves and pull the cassettes out of their cases!

I wonder what kind of a programmer Kurt Vonnegut would have been? Where's Ralph Nader Radio when you need it? OOOPS, I need to return to my automated self and stop using my brain so that I will be once again sugestible and vulnerable to automated advertisers. It's all about a stack of high-rotation tunes and counting the green after all!
