Smart Cards Go To Hollywood
------------------------------------------------------------
Fans will soon be able to use smart cards to access Web sites offering behind-the-scenes footage and interviews about the recently released film "Star Trek Nemesis" from Paramount and to play video games based on Disney’s "Treasure Planet." The chip cards are from UK-based Internet plc, which introduced its first SmartFlash cards offering Web-based content earlier this year with a series of five cards aimed at fans of pop star Britney Spears. Initially available via the Internet and at two retail locations in London, a card and smart card reader set sells for $24.95 and a single chip card for $7.95. The SmartFlash chip card readers comply with EMV, the international standard for credit and debit smart cards, and that opens the door for payment card issuers to offer services to SmartFlash customers, Steven Landau, president of Internet plc, tells Cardline/CardFax. While U.S. credit card issuers have not had much luck convincing consumers to plug smart card readers into their PCs, Landau says that is because the applications offered were not compelling. "These are compelling entertainment properties and entertainment drives technological adoption," he says. Landau says Internet plc has had discussions with financial issuers, but would not elaborate.
------------------------------------------------------------
Landau says Internet plc expects to have similar licensing deals within the next year with at least nine musical artists or groups, and will offer chip cards aimed at fan clubs of those musicians. He says the company will begin selling SmartFlash products in U.S. retail stores in the first half of 2003 and projects having millions of customers within a few years. If that goal is realized, he expects there will be significant interest among financial issuers in offering services through the SmartFlash card readers. Landau says the company distributed its full stock of 25,000 Britney Spears cards, but could not say how many ended up in the hands of consumers. He says plans to issue more Britney Spears chip cards have been put off due to Spears’ decision to take some time off from performing.

Star Trek SmartFlash Smart Card Is Here
-----------------------------------------------------------
Internet announced it has secured a significant license deal with Viacom. The exclusive license for smart card systems allows them to create complementary smart card products for Star Trek: The Next Generation, Enterprise (the current Star Trek TV show) and the forthcoming motion picture, Star Trek Nemesis in theatres December 13.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Using its proprietary SmartFlash system, Internet has created a new smart card system for the delivery of entertainment. The system combines their proprietary SmartFlash smart card technology with Paramount's Star Trek: The Next Generation and the forthcoming blockbuster, Star Trek Nemesis, to create the ultimate Star Trek SmartFlash experience.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The Star Trek SmartFlash interactive experience includes a series of four collectible credit card sized smart cards featuring a range of eye-catching designs from the film and from the Star Trek Universe. Each card serves as a key to unlock the content that includes planet tours, complete series synopses, behind-the-scenes footage, exclusive images, audio and video clips as well as interviews from both the moviemakers and Star Trek writers, including Michael Westmore, John Eaves and Herman Zimmermann. The Star Trek SmartFlash experience home and indulge in truly special behind-the-scenes material.
------------------------------------------------------------
SmartFlash bridges the offline world of entertainment with the online world of the Internet creating a dynamic new technology, media channel and consumer smart card product. SmartFlash is an innovative entertainment system that allows direct and easy access to exclusive content online. The unique system combines a smart card reader with a series of collectible smart cards. Each SmartFlash card acts as a key that unlocks a world of not yet seen multimedia entertainment content and applications and is an expandable platform.
------------------------------------------------------------
"We are delighted to be working with Viacom Consumer Products and in particular with Paramount Pictures. Our Star Trek SmartFlash experience and coincident release of blockbuster Star Trek Nemesis, together provide the ultimate vehicle with which to drive adoption of our new and exciting SmartFlash technology platform," said Steven Landau, President & CEO, Internet.
------------------------------------------------------------
"Viacom Consumer Products is delighted to be working with Internet plc. The SmartFlash Star Trek experience is a strong complement to the film and television series," said Pam Newton, VP Licensing, VCP. "We are very excited by the SmartFlash concept and see it as an ideal platform for us to deliver high quality content to the fans."
------------------------------------------------------------
The credit card-sized SmartFlash card is simply inserted into a SmartFlash reader connected to a PC via the USB port. This system gives users direct access to a unique and privileged entertainment environment. Each SmartFlash card features a "smart chip" which has the ability to safely hold the user's unique access code. Only cardholders have access to the privileged content.
------------------------------------------------------------
The first SmartFlash licenses are associated with major film releases, but the SmartFlash offering is constantly evolving. Future product releases will include games, sports, music and other entertainment properties. It will soon be possible to use SmartFlash to purchase concert, sport and film tickets, download exclusive music and much more -- the possibilities are endless.
