Date Posted: Tuesday, February 11, 03:08:17am In reply to: Drudge Report September 23rd 2001 's message, "Bush contemplates National I.D. Card for all citizens.--U.K." on Tuesday, February 11, 02:49:48am Interesting announcement by the Dutch Government relating to Smart Cards. ------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.cards-worldwide.com/Tmpl/article.asp?CID=17&AID=18278&SCID=122&TCode=NW ------------------------------------------------------------ It also notes (something that I did not realise) that the US government has implemented a policy of "no smart card with biometric information on it, no entry" from International destinations by October, 2004. This will force governments world wide to introduce similar systems if they want businesses to compete in the global market place. ------------------------------------------------------------ I will try and find US government standards relating to this to verify article and post at later date. Apologies to anyone previously posting this information and that I did not read it. ------------------------------------------------------------ Best of Luck Lost ------------------------------------------------------------ Dutch passports to get biometric security chip ------------------------------------------------------------ 03/02/2003 ------------------------------------------------------------ Starting autumn, 2004, Dutch passports are to be equipped with an electronic chip containing the passport holders' biometric details, reports the Dutch financial daily, NRC Handelsblad, ------------------------------------------------------------ The chip's introduction is to coincide with the deadline of a new US law - to come into effect October, 2004 - that requires visitors to the US to have passports capable of holding information electronically - distinguishing biometrics such as fingerprints, or facial or iris scans. ------------------------------------------------------------ The Dutch authorities, who have been working since 1998 to ensure that the use of biometrically secured passports falls within Dutch law, completed their investigation into iris-scan security at the end of 2002. ----------------------------------------------------------- In the event that these secure passports are not available by the deadline, Dutch travellers to the US will be able to purchase a biometrically secured entry-visa at their nearest American consulate.
