International Standards
------------------------------------------------------------
ISO 7816
------------------------------------------------------------
Global standards cover smart cards and apply to all application sectors. The standards are grouped under the acronym ISO 7816 and specify the physical and dimensional features of the plastic supports (7816/1), the meaning and location of the contacts (7816/2), the protocols and contents of the high and low level messages exchanged with microprocessor smart cards (7816/3). Standard 7816/4 specifies the inter-industry commands.
------------------------------------------------------------
EMV
------------------------------------------------------------
The major international financial institutions (ie Visa, Mastercard and Europay) started as early as 1993 to build smart card banking solutions based on the EMV standards. The standards were finalized in 1996 and cover the protocol, data and instruction parts together with the transactions involving bank microprocessor smart cards.
------------------------------------------------------------
ETSI
------------------------------------------------------------
In the digital cellular telecommunications sector, a European standardization committee, the ETSI, was set up in anticipation of the new European "GSM" system, in order to lay down specific and exhaustive recommendations.
------------------------------------------------------------
All mobile telecommunications networks created in Europe since then have successfully followed these recommendations. Following this, the European GSM specifications were imposed throughout the world.
-----------------------------------------------------------
C-SET
-----------------------------------------------------------
In parallel with the SET, another Standard has been established in France: C-SET (Chip-Secure Electronic Transaction), using French bank microprocessor smart cards. This system was defined by the GIE Cartes Bancaires. Using a small smart card reader connected to a microcomputer, the user "signs" his/her purchase by entering his/her confidential code. C-SET is interoperable with the SET protocol.
