Date Posted: Thursday, April 03, 03:00:24pm In reply to: Cards Asia 200323-25 April Cindy Cheng, Director of Sales and Marketing, Octopus Cards Ltd, Hong Kong 's message, " " on Thursday, February 13, 03:45:06amPRESS RELEASE PROTON WORLD SHAREHOLDER ERG WINS SESAMES BEST APPLICATION AWARD INTERNATIONAL JURY RECOGNISES ACHIEVEMENT IN HONG KONG Brussels, 9 November 1998 Proton World are delighted to announce that their shareholder ERG, the mass-transit ticketing systems specialist based in Perth, Australia, has been awarded the prestigious SESAMES Best Application Award at the Cartes 98 show in Paris, for its Octopus system in Hong Kong. ERG were chosen by the international jury from among the three finalists, who in turn had been selected from 51 nominees representing 14 countries. The Octopus system in Hong Kong is a contactless smart card system used for public transport fare payments, and is the most advanced automated fare collection system in the world, with over four-and-a-half million cards issued, and a network of ten thousand terminals processing four million transactions a day. The Octopus system was developed for Creative Star Ltd., a joint venture between ERG and the major public transport operators in Hong Kong. The system’s sophisticated software allows a daily reconciliation of fares collected and revenue apportionment between the various operators. The Octopus system has been recently extended to cover public telephones and retail outlets. ERG has made a global smart card alliance with Motorola in order to market the Octopus system to other major cities. ERG’s success at Cartes 98 follows on from its receipt of the Information Industries Export Award at the 1998 Western Australia Industry and Export Awards in October. Mr Peter Fogarty, the Chief Executive of ERG, commented “ This is the most prestigious award made in the smart card industry globally. We are delighted to have received international acknowledgement for the application of our technology. The Award is recognition of our ability to develop world-leading technology and of the foresight of our customer, Creative Star Ltd in Hong Kong, in embracing contactless technology.” The SESAMES Best Application Award was won by Banksys in 1996 for the Proton technology. Banksys and ERG, together with American Express, Interpay and Visa, were founding shareholders in Proton World, which was created in June 1998 to develop, commercialise and support Proton-based smart card schemes world-wide, and to develop common international standards for electronic purses, and multi-application smart card systems. ERG and Proton World are currently working together to develop combined contact/contactless technologies for use on the same multi-application smart cards.
