ERG sells Proton World

Smartcard company ERG has sold its 100 per cent interest in Belgian-based Proton World to micro-chip manufacturer STMicroelectronics for $110 million. The Perth-based company said after the settlement of all inter-company accounts and payments for the global rights to the Proton technology, ERG will receive cash proceeds of around $60 million at settlement. It also said a milestone fee of $40.9 million is payable to ERG on deferred terms tied to milestones over the next 10 years. The milestones relate to the sale to ERG or its customers of smart cards that incorporate an ST chip. The deal is expected to settle in April.
