Agencies agree on transit ‘smart cards'
SEATTLE (AP) -- In three years, transit riders throughout the Puget Sound area should be able to ride buses, trains and ferries from seven agencies using a single "smart card" for the fares. Agencies agreed Tuesday on the electronic fare plan. It includes a $31 million contract with ERG Co. of Australia for machines and software.
The company also will receive $33 million in the first 10 years of operation.

The seven agencies are Sound Transit, King County Metro, Community Transit in Snohomish County, Everett Transit, Kitsap Transit, Pierce Transit and the Washington state ferries. Other agencies may join the smart card system later.
