's message, "Yes I'm lamb chopping my way through this whole ERG experience" on Saturday, July 26, 08:32:09pm http://smh.com.au/articles/2003/09/22/1064082913377.html On the buses: Once upon a time you hopped on a bus to go to work and handed your money to the driver, who gave you a paper ticket for your journey. These days, chances are that as you step on a bus you'll be inserting a smart card into a machine. Peter Levy, group general manager for technology at the Perth-based ERG Group (who helped design and implement Melbourne's OneLink system and are now working on an integrated transport ticketing system for Sydney) explains that under a smart card ticketing system, the IT networks of the transport operators - whether they be rail, tram or bus operators - are linked with the system's operator and a central clearing house. At the time of purchase - from a bus depot, railway station, newsagent or wherever - the "ticket" is formatted to include a range of details, such as dates and values, and the information is sent back to the central clearing house, which sorts out a financial settlement between the scheme's participants. Then, each time the card is scanned or inserted for use, it is run through a series of validation checks before its details are recorded and updated. The new information is again sent back to the central clearing house, where settlement is again made between the parties involved.
