Atlanta Trains First In U.S. To Go Smart Card-Only

Atlanta’s transit agency has awarded a $72.5 million contract to Cubic Transportation Systems to deploy what is likely to be the first major U.S. system that relies almost exclusively on smart cards for fare payment. The Metropolitan Atlanta Regional Transit Authority (MARTA) plans to replace all the magnetic stripe cards and tokens now in use with contactless chip cards by early 2006, says Neil Poling, manager of transit system enhancements. He says MARTA has placed an order for 1.2 million plastic cards that regular commuters will use and for 6.9 million lower-cost paper chip cards for occasional riders. That initial order of cards is expected to be delivered between the time the contract is approved by MARTA’s board and early 2007. Commuters will use the chip cards to pay for bus and train fares and for parking at MARTA lots. Cash will also be accepted on buses, but all train riders will use chip cards as MARTA attempts to reduce cash-handling, Poling says. Both the plastic and paper cards will carry contactless chips so commuters can pay fares by passing the card near a turnstile or farebox target or by tapping the target with the card. Cubic says the contract could be worth as much as $104 million if all options are exercised. Cubic has deployed contactless chip cards systems in Washington and Chicago, but those transit systems also accept magnetic stripe fare cards.
