London Cabbies To Get Smart Cards

UK-based Applied Card Technologies Ltd. Says it has won a contract to equip 3,000 London taxi drivers with smart cards as part of a system to make it easier to hail a cab in the UK’s capital. Zingo, a subsidiary of Manganese Bronze Holdings Plc, has placed the order for the initial phase of a program that could roll out to 60,000 taxis nationwide, say ACT officials. A cab driver will insert his smart card into a reader in his cab when beginning a shift. The card will carry the cabbie’s name and his cell phone number. A satellite system will track the cab and direct calls to that cab when it is the nearest available taxi to someone seeking a cab. ACT, which has developed a variety of smart card-based loyalty and leisure programs, also announced new applications aimed at helping issuers; including local governments in the United Kingdom, to issue multifunction smarts that support transit payment as well as such features as access to libraries and recreational facilities.
