Govt expected to adopt bus review recommendations
A trial involving a "smartcard" to replace all public transport tickets is one of the recommendations of a review into Sydney's bus services that is expected to be endorsed today by the New South Wales Government.

The review, chaired by former premier Barrie Unsworth, is also recommending the creation of 43 bus corridors with services every 10 minutes in peak times and extending the pensioner concession card.

Mr Unsworth says it is envisaged the smartcard will operate like motorway e-tags.

It will be trialled by school students on Sydney's north shore later this year.

"Hopefully that'll be introduced for school students from the commencement of 2005 and then subsequently in 2006 it's intended to extend it right across the community," Mr Unsworth said.

"Once you've got the smartcard, it's like the tag you use on the Harbour Bridge.

"You can load it up and travel by whatever form of transport you wish to use."

Transport Minister Michael Costa says the Government will adopt recommendations from the review to make bus services in New South Wales more frequent and direct.

Mr Costa says the new system will look at better coordination between public and private bus operators.

"The Unsworth Review is about providing a blueprint to provide more frequent and direct services and more rational services," Mr Costa said.

"The network of strategic routes that was proposed in the interim report will provide a network of services to take people from their homes to the locations they need."
