Voices: High-speed airport link

THESTAR.COM STAFF

Transport Minister David Collenette is expected to decide in the next two months on a $2.5 billion high-speed connection between Union Station and Pearson Airport. Is this a top transit priority for the GTA? Here's what you had to say:
The only way you can make the airport line work is if you were to run a parallel urban line on the same track in which normal everyday commuters could use.
Ray Chong, Hong Kong, Oct. 15

A rail link is a great idea. Make it underground and hook it up with Yorkdale or Downsview.
Stephen Belcourt, Toronto, Oct. 15

I have travelled extensively in Europe and all cities the size of Toronto have a rail link from the downtown core to the airport. It should be operated by the TTC and a premium fare charged.
Alan Loughlin, Cape Town, South Africa, Oct. 15

Who exactly is this for? How many people need to go from Union Station to Pearson? Downtown business people take the train. Fat chance.
Ian Ferguson, Midland, Oct. 15

I see another white elephant wandering around in Metro. Why not just link up the airport and the TTC?
Tony Tse, Scarborough, Oct. 15

Rail service into Pearson is a great idea. But why just a Pearson-Union link? The rail corridor that passes by Pearson is the same corridor that the Brampton/Georgetown GO trains and the Guelph/Kitchener/Windsor/Chicago VIA trains use.
Raymond Dartsch, Hamilton, Oct. 15

The greater need is a circular high speed rail link around Toronto from Long Branch GO station to Pearson Airport to Downsview Park to Sheppard and Yonge TTC. This serves a public need. Spending $2.5 billion for a singular purpose to support the Pearson Airport is a business decision not a public need.
Alex Que, Toronto, Oct. 15

Money would be better spent on getting a high speed rail link between Montreal and Windsor going.
Jim Collier, Toronto, Oct. 15

It's a good start, but we need better and more improved VIA Rail service as well.
Marc Bernstein, Toronto, Oct. 15

Absolutely. The Pearson link would be a great addition to our traffic-clogged city.
Derek Lipman, Toronto, Oct. 14

Toronto is in desperate need of a link between the airport and the downtown core. We consider ourselves to be a world-class city and yet we fail to provide basic infrastructure needs.
Domenic Oppedisano, Toronto, Oct. 14

A link between downtown Toronto and Pearson would seem to be an important first step towards renewing the crippled transportation system in the GTA.
Brian Courtney, Stanford, Calif., Oct. 14

A dedicated rail-link between the airport and the downtown core is a prerequisite for a world-class city. Frankly, it is embarrassing to require travellers to commute between Pearson and downtown on taxis or buses.
Dave Ho, Toronto, Oct. 14

Probably not a top transit priority, but an important element to the Toronto and Pearson competitiveness in a global world.
Patrick Rault, Toronto, Oct. 14

I don't think investing into Union-Pearson connection is a top priority. So many more people would benefit if the funding was used for TTC instead.
Rimma Skeini, Toronto, Oct. 14

Absolutely - it makes the city more user-friendly and the airport much more accessible.
Sandy Briggs, Mississauga, Oct. 14

Anyone who has tried to get in and out of the airport knows that a rail link would be a timely addition to the ever-expanding Toronto airport and should be a priority.
Rob Griffin, Etobicoke, Oct. 14

Yes, yes, yes!
Kevin Rogers, Toronto, Oct. 14

By spending the money on a rail link, we would not have to spend the money on a link to the island airport (unpopular anyways).
Ben Hishon, Toronto, Oct. 14

It makes life easier and cheaper for Torontonians who don't have a vehicle to reach the airport without having to pay hefty taxi charges.
Giath Hamdan, Scarborough, Oct. 14

Collenette has been playing with model trains for too long. In the real world, only a small fraction of the supposed 77,000 passengers a day originate from or end their journey close enough to Union Station to make use of a train. There is already coach service between Pearson and the larger downtown hotels.
Joshua Albert, Toronto, Oct. 14

It gives every resident of Toronto better access to the airport and every visitor to Toronto better access to many parts of the city. A win-win proposal!
Hari Balaraman, Toronto, Oct. 14

Most major airports in Europe have fast rail connections. It helps to bring the big international airports, as many as 40 miles out of the city, "into" the city. They are fast and comfortable.
Dave Smith, Edinburgh, Scotland, Oct. 14

The current proposal is deeply flawed. The proposed route will bypass only about 10 per cent of the Metro Toronto population, meaning that 90 per cent will find it inconvenient to access.
Ron Freedman, Toronto, Oct. 14

If this plan will get some cars off the road, I think it's a fantastic idea. Twenty minutes to Pearson from Union Station is better than up to two hours by car any day!
Jennifer Stanley, Hamilton, Oct. 14

This type of sustainable development is key to keeping cars off the road, reducing pollution, and making travel across the city easier.
Graeme Stewart, Toronto, Oct. 14

A link to the airport would be nice, but there are dozens of other transit problems in the GTA. Let's try an original concept: instead of piecemeal, patchwork transit solutions, why not have an overall public transit strategy and apply it systematically?
Craig Urquhart, Toronto, Oct. 14

I can see that $2.5 billion better spent on perhaps expanding the TTC Subway north of Steeles and perhaps even east and west along Steeles.
Darrell Lafave, Richmond Hill, Oct. 14

I think the money would be better spent in providing high-speed links between Toronto and the growing population centres outside Toronto.
Scott Elms, Oakville, Oct. 14

Most of the world's major cities already have high-speed rail links to their airports. This is long overdue for Toronto.
Kim Koyama, Toronto, Oct. 14

What we need is to expand the existing subway system to reach the airport.
Tony Fay, Toronto, Oct. 14
