Purpose of the event

The event is being held to disseminate information on the

development and implementation of Nottinghamshire County

Councils’ smartcard system.

‘freedom card’ is a unique smartcard application which has been

developed across multiple ticketing equipment types and numerous

bus operators to validate both concessionary fares and education

transport.

As a Beacon Council Nottinghamshire County Council wishes to share

their experiences (warts and all) with others who may be considering

travelling a similar route.

During the ‘Smart Journey’ Conference exhibitions and demonstrations will be held, in the

exhibition hall and outside on vehicle, covering the processes involved in delivering the

Nottinghamshire ‘freedom card’’ scheme. Scheme partners and panel members will be available

9:30 Arrivals and Registration and demonstrations

10:15 Welcome and Introduction to the day

This session will welcome delegates to the event and will

orientate them as to the general objectives of the day and in

particular the opportunities to meet suppliers and see

demonstrations of the various system components.

10:30 The ‘freedom card’ journey

This session will outline the Nottinghamshire County Council

smartcard scheme and give an overview of the development

journey.

STAGE 1

10:45 The Journey Begins

Stage 1 summarises the initial objectives of the scheme in

improving and automating the exercise of statutory and

concessionary travel entitlements in the county, along with the

expected benefits of its operation and the barriers and issues

to be overcome. The session will also explain how

participating local authorities and bus operators were

approached in order to obtain their support.

It will conclude with a panel discussion and question and

answer session involving local and national participating bus

operators

11:15 Refreshment Break in the ‘demonstration and exhibition’ area

STAGE 2

11:45 Turning the wheels

Stage 2 explains the practicalities and associated problems of

issuing cards to travellers and also working alongside partner

authorities i.e District Councils.

This will be followed by a panel discussion and a question and

answer session involving card and card initialisation suppliers

and District Councils.

12:30 Luncheon, Networking and demonstrations in the exhibition

hall plus outdoor on-vehicle demonstrations

STAGE 3

2:00 Speeding Up

Stage 3 sets out the system and specification development

and addresses the operational issues of implementation of an

interoperable smartcard system.

Followed by a panel discussion including representatives from

the three participating ticket machine suppliers and

Nottinghamshires’ technical consultants.

2:45 Refreshment Break in the ‘demonstration and exhibition’ area

STAGE 4

3:15 Maintaining the vehicle

Stage 4 covers all the support systems necessary to maintain

the scheme in operation:- Back office systems, support

mechanisms for drivers, quality control, file transfer procedures,

depot management for small operators and data analysis.

STAGE 5

4:00 Journeys end or is it the beginning?

Following implementation of the current phase what’s next for

‘freedom card’’?

The final stage explores the future of the scheme, its’

integration with local commercial applications and the

migration to the ITSO specification.

BracknellSome 22,000 residents also own "dumb" Edge loyalty cards which do not have chips and are used for discounts at shops and leisure services, and these will be upgraded in September.The council will also terminate its contract with British Telecom subsidary BT Ignite on June 17, and continue working with partner PCL on expanding the card.Sunday, July 06, 10:15:03am
