New York Moves Toward A Regional Smart Card For Transit
----------------------------------------------------------
PATH, an operator of commuter trains between Manhattan and New Jersey, will introduce chip cards for fare payment next year in the first step toward what is expected to become a regional smart card system for the New York metropolitan area, Robert J. Hamilton of Carlsbad, CA-based Three Point Consulting Inc. tells Card Technology. PATH is upgrading its fare-collection system at its 13 stations as it rebuilds two stations in the vicinity of the World Trade Center closed since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Chip card readers will be part of the new equipment and contactless cards that commuters wave past targets on turnstiles will be issued starting next year, Hamilton says. PATH, with about 200,000 regular riders, is the smallest of the three principal transit agencies that serve the New York area, and a smart card that could be used throughout the region could be carried by millions of riders. Three Point Consulting has been engaged by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to develop a plan for a regional smart card. Hamilton says issuance of such a card is at least three years away. Hamilton made his comments during an interview at the CardTech/SecurTech show in Orlando.
