Date Posted: Tuesday, September 09, 04:52:11am Boeing Plans To Issue 200,000 Smart Card IDs In what would be one of the largest smart card rollouts by a private corporation, aircraft manufacturer Boeing Co. plans to issue chip-based identity cards to more than 200,000 employees and contractors over a 5-year period. The deal was announced today by Siemens Information and Communications Networks Inc., a U.S.-based subsidiary of Siemens AG of Germany, one of Europe’s largest technology companies. Employees will use the smart cards both to log on to company computer networks and to enter buildings. A pilot is scheduled in the third quarter of this year, with rollout to being early in 2004, according to Siemens. The initial deployment will focus on computer network access and build on Boeing’s existing public key infrastructure, or PKI, a technology for authenticating individuals across networks, including the Internet. France-based smart card vendor Gemplus SA says it will supply the smart cards for Boeing’s SecureBadge project. UK-based BellID will also supply technology, according to Siemens. The Boeing project is part of a trend toward corporations replacing their existing ID cards with smart cards for greater security and functionality, especially for securing electronic data and communications. Among the publicly disclosed corporate smart card projects, Japan’s Nissan has issued 125,000 chip cards, Royal Dutch/Shell Group 120,000 cards and Japanese semiconductor manufacturer Hitachi 100,000 cards.
