Visitors would be able to swipe the same electronic card at Edinburgh Castle and on local buses under the plan to make the Capital more tourist-friendly. A one-off fee would be charged for one of the city visitor cards, which would be valid for either one, two or three days. As well as London and Barcelona, similar schemes are running in several other major European cities, including Amsterdam, Berlin, Vienna and Brussels. Talks about getting a smart card scheme started in Edinburgh have been going on for several years. Now Edinburgh and Lothians Tourist Board, Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothian and the council have agreed to share the cost of turning it into reality. It is thought the Visitor City Card could also offer discounts at selected stores, theatres and on walking tours. A one-day London Pass, which offers free entry to more than 60 attractions and use of public transport, costs GBP 27. Lothian Buses, which two years ago launched its own smart card scheme for bus passes, has already pledged its support for the plan. Edinburgh's leading attractions, including the Royal Yacht Britannia, Edinburgh Castle, Our Dynamic Earth and the Scotch Whisky Visitor Centre, are expected to be invited to take part in the scheme. A project manager is being appointed to complete feasibility studies, market the scheme and hopefully get it off the ground. The Edinburgh and Lothians Tourist Board post will be for one year initially and will have a salary of GBP 25,000. A tourist board spokeswoman said: "The idea for this [the smart card] has been floating about for some time. We are employing someone to finalise the feasibility studies. If they're favourable, the project will go ahead." [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
