Western Australian bus operator Bunbury City Transit (BCT) launched the new smart card system in Bunbury – Western Australia’s sixth largest city – this week. ----------------------------------------------------------- The single-chip, dual-interface contact and contactless smart card is expected to revolutionize the smart card industry. The single-chip smart card provides a more cost-effective and efficient multi-application solution. Applications on the card will be able to operate in contact and contactless modes, maximizing flexibility for cardholders and application owners. The dual-interface solution meets the needs of both the electronic payment sector, which requires contacted smart cards for security, and the needs of the transit sector, which requires the speed provided by contactless smart cards. ------------------------------------------------------------ The Bunbury smart card system will initially be used in the contactless transit application mode and has the ability for the contacted interface to be integrated with electronic purse schemes in the future. This will enable applications as diverse as membership, loyalty, access, telephone, parking, vending, road toll payments and general retail purchases. Ultimately, transit users will be able to reload their smart cards with cash or ticket types via their mobile phone or their home telephone. ------------------------------------------------------------ The Bunbury system will utilize Motorola’s M-Smart™ Venus card that combines multiple applications on a single chip. The Motorola card will work in conjunction with ERG’s proven transit application software across its transit hardware and software solution. ----------------------------------------------------------- Transit is often considered the killer application needed to expand smart card usage, mainly because of the high volume and frequency of use experienced in transit systems. As a result, it has become more important that smart cards support contactless functionality. The primary reason is that transit operators require smart cards to work in contactless mode to improve passenger boarding times. The contactless functionality allows riders to simply wave the card in front of a reader rather than inserting it into a slot, thereby reducing the transaction time from seconds to a fraction of a second. ------------------------------------------------------------ The system, designed for BCT by the ERG/Motorola Alliance, will enable BCT to obtain sophisticated management information, thereby reducing their operating costs and improving the service to passengers. The BCT system also will offer two options for prepaid travel: a student all zone multi-ride card, which will work in the same way as existing multi-ride ticket booklets; and a stored value card for all other rides. ------------------------------------------------------------ "Contact smart cards are not fast enough to be used in transit applications and focus only on the payment function," said Peter Fogarty, ERG’s chief executive officer. "The new system developed by the ERG/Motorola Alliance meets the requirements of our transit customers whilst providing the important functionality necessary for electronic payment, loyalty, etc. It is the breakthrough technology we have been waiting for." ------------------------------------------------------------ "The alliance is very proud to have commercially deployed the first single-chip, contact/contactless card in the marketplace," said Francois Dutray, Motorola’s vice president and general manager, Worldwide Smartcard Solutions Division. ------------------------------------------------------------ "Motorola’s single-chip, dual-interface smart card provides a solution for any city around the world that wishes to combine both contact and contactless on the same smart card." ------------------------------------------------------------ The ERG Motorola Alliance combines ERG’s world-leading smart card and magnetic ticket based integrated fare collection application expertise with Motorola’s innovative M-Smart world of flexible smart card platform solutions, its systems integration and its operational management capabilities. Complementary strengths of the alliance include complete wireless voice and data communication systems; location tracking and management; revenue management expertise; systems integration and operating services capabilities; and electronic purse operating experience. ------------------------------------------------------------ ERG is a world leader in the development and supply of technologically advanced smart card systems and services; automated fare collection products and systems; and telecommunications products and services. ERG provides turnkey solutions to customers, from design and manufacture, to supply, installation, commissioning and ongoing service and maintenance. In 1997/98 ERG’s revenue totaled A$242 million.
