Sun Issues Smart Card IDs To 20,000 Employees

U.S.-based computer manufacturer Sun Microsystems has issued new smart card IDs to 20,000 employees, and plans to roll out a total of 35,000 chip cards to employees and contractors by late June, says Chris Saleh, manager of the JavaBadge project. The cards use the Java Card operating platform developed by Sun on a 32-kilobyte smart card. U.S.-based ActivCard supplies applets for authenticating cardholders to the Sun network, as well as desktop and back-office software. The cards carry two chips and a magnetic stripe. One chip, connected to an antenna embedded in the card, uses contactless Mifare technology from Netherlands-based Philips Semiconductors. This will over time allow cardholders to enter Sun facilities with a wave of the card. Currently, Sun facilities use magnetic-stripe access control devices, and the card also carries a mag stripe to permit entry to buildings while the company gradually introduces contactless smart card readers.

The card also carries a conventional contact chip with the Java Card software. This will eventually be used for authenticating cardholders to the network and digitally signing documents, for enabling users to access their personal computer files through 25,000 desktop Sun Ray workstations scattered throughout Sun’s offices, as an electronic purse in some facilities and for allowing employees to access Sun’s networks when they are away from company campuses. Saleh says the smart card ID furthers important Sun initiatives, such as enabling employees to work from home or the road, while also demonstrating Sun technology, such as Java Card and Sun Ray. "This shows our customers how we’re flying our own airplane," he says. "That was a key driving force for Sun." He estimates the smart card project will be completed for under $3 million.
