Smart Card Trade Group Expands

Twenty-six companies and government agencies have joined the Smart Card Alliance, raising the group’s membership to more than 100 organizations that use or sell smart card technology. Among the new members is the Transportation Security Administration, a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation that is evaluating smart cards for use in a proposed standard ID card for 12 million U.S. transportation workers. Another new member is the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, which is negotiating a contract with San Diego-based Cubic Transportation Systems to introduce a contactless chip card for fare payment. Other new members include biometric firm Identix; Vivotech, which is providing contactless payment card readers for MasterCard’s PayPass trial in Orlando; and major consulting firms BearingPoint and Booz Allen Hamilton.

“Companies must choose wisely what organizations to belong to in these times,” Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance, said in a prepared statement. “For the Alliance to be gaining these highly respected commercial and government organizations as members, demonstrates there is real value here.”
