The extension is 2km east past the existing Mont Albert terminus of the 109 route, to Box Hill (where incidentally I grew up and went to school). Courtesy of a member of a mailing list I am on, this URL has some excellent pix of the first tram to Box Hill. http://www.myweb.net.au/trams/109extension/020503/ The 109 is served by 100pc low-floor French Citadis trams and the class leader of this recently acquired fleet, 3001, performed the opening run carrying the usual load of politicians and other dignitaries who will not use public transit again till the next tram extension opens (likely to be the Vermont South extension of the 75 East Burwood line, already about 25km long). About half of the extension is in the middle of Whitehorse Rd sharing the roadspace with other traffic (most Melbourne trams run in mixed traffic) but some stops have the kerbs extended to the track so that passengers do not have to rely on motorists obeying the law and stopping behind a tram while passengers board and alight. The rest of the extension is in a central reservation with grass between the tracks, a Melbourne first, copied from Strasbourg in France where the tram tracks are noted for often being laid in grass -- like the tracks in the neutral zones in New Orleans. Box Hill is about 18km from the CBD and is a major transit, shopping and education hub. I work in Collingwood right outside the 109 and I saw plenty of A class trams and also that B class in the Ikea ad livery running today.. Great for the cars, the passengers don't get much benefit from being corralled into little islands in the middle of the road, and in many circumstances are actually worse off.. On Victoria Parade, I can tell you that if I can see the tram and I'm at the kerb, I've probably missed that tram and have to wait another 8 minutes or whatever for the next one, since cars don't have to give way to you in those circumstances.. It's the same at super stops, and even old fashioned safety zones in wide roads too.. I do like the new Kerb Access stop design though.. They could be a little more bike friendly though.. What I was saying was that the Citadis trams are 100pc low-floor. They have no high-floor sections, unlike some "low-floor" trams elsewhere in the world and like most "low-floor" buses which have high-floor rear sections. Lots of As (high floor trams) ran on the 109 till the Box Hill extension opened, and in fact the last tram to the old Mont Albert terminus on Friday night was an A, I am told. But Yarra Trams has required that only Citadis trams will operate the entire route 109 from Port Melbourne to Box Hill, as from first service tram today (Sunday). So there will be 100pc 100pc low-floor trams on this line, and pigs will fly. david mcl.
