After years of delays and court battles, the government of New South Wales today announced it had awarded a contract to implement the smart card system to Integrated Transit Solutions, a subsidiary of ERG Group Ltd. of Australia. The government set the value of the contract at A$320 million (US$189), but ERG says inflation escalators should raise the payments to the company to A$370 million over 10 years. ERG says it expects the system will be completely operational by 2006, and that 2 million smart cards will be issued for use on buses, trains and ferries in the Sydney area. ERG also operates a pilot smart card system for transit operators in San Francisco and recently won a contract to provide a financial clearinghouse for a single smart card that will be accepted by bus and subway operators in the Washington-Baltimore area. ----------------------------------------------------------- ERG says the contract value includes about A$94 million to supply the system and A$276 to operate it for 10 years. A competitor, U.S.-based Cubic Transportation Systems, fought an unsuccessful court battle that ended last year challenging the contract award to ERG. ----------------------------------------------------------- Other major cities around the world that have, or are rolling out, transit smart card systems include London, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Chicago, Seoul and Washington. ----------------------------------------------------------- ( 2003-02-20 ) [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
