Telstra puts broadband in a box to drive Internet take up
-----------------------------------------------------------
11 February 2003
-----------------------------------------------------------
Telstra’s Broadband growth is set to receive a further boost with the BigPond Broadband ADSL self-install kit becoming available from more than 400 retail outlets including Telstra shops, licensed shops and dealers by the end of February.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Telstra’s new Chief of BigPond, Justin Milne, said that the self install kits are already driving broadband take up and appealing to price sensitive customers, with customer orders for the technology racing ahead of Telstra’s initial forecast.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Mr Milne said the BigPond Broadband ADSL self-install kit was the latest breakthrough for cost conscious customers and would help Telstra increase its retail and wholesale customer levels from more than 250,000 today to one million by the end of 2005.
-----------------------------------------------------------
“Almost 70 per cent of new BigPond Broadband ADSL connections are now self installed. The lower priced ADSL self-install kit, which can be set up from as little as eight clicks of the mouse, targets the mass market and supports Telstra's efforts to further boost broadband take-up,” Mr Milne said.
------------------------------------------------------------
“In March 2002, BigPond price reductions put broadband within reach of more customers with cable starting from $54.95 and ADSL* from $59.95 per month once connected. These are designed to help more Australians take up broadband and have been extremely popular. Telstra estimates that its entry level pricing plans account for more than 50 per cent of new plan subscriptions.”
------------------------------------------------------------
On December 1, 2002 Telstra announced BigPond Broadband price reductions including an increased download limit on the low-end plans, from 300MB to 500MB without a price increase. The high-end 5GB and 10GB plan prices were reduced by as much as 23 per cent.
------------------------------------------------------------
The BigPond Broadband ADSL self-install kit retails from $129** (recommended retail price) and includes the modem and related connectivity products. The modem is currently exclusive to Telstra and has provision for USB or Ethernet connectivity and added security through network address translation (NAT), a modem feature, which prevents unauthorised access to computers on home networks. The kit comprises a modem, filters and installation compact disc.
------------------------------------------------------------
For a professional install, customers pay $249 ($120 more than the self install option). Telstra can pass on a substantial reduction to customers as self-install significantly reduces installation time and removes the high labour and resource costs that come with professional installations. Telstra is confident that the sales process for the self-install kit is dealer friendly, with resources available online.
------------------------------------------------------------
Broadband Internet users can quickly download large files, view Web casts in real time, experience interactive gaming or simply enjoy Web surfing without the long wait for pages to download. The benefits for small and home businesses include high-speed access to email, Web browsing and download of large content rich documents. There are no dial-up costs and no need for a second line.
------------------------------------------------------------
* Type of broadband service available will depend on customer’s geographic location. ADSL is not available in all areas or from all customers’ services. Full service qualification checks will be made upon application. Please refer to the BigPond broadband ADSL website for initial advice at http://www.bigpond.com/ **refers to 18 month plan.
