Subject: cold (non) start clonk!

Occassionally, and only when it's cold, when starting up my ZZR600E7 the starter motor just about starts to turn the engine but stops dead with a loud & worrying clonk! The only way I've found to get it going is to rock the bike bakwards & forwards in 3rd gear a few times & keep trying. The engine is obviously not seized 'cos I can manually wind it back a bit only to have it clonk to a stop after a slightly longer turn. Appart from this the 20K engine runs sweet. Any idea what could be causing this???
