The ST makes a great high-mileage rear tyre but DONT put the Avon ST on the front especially at this time of year, they don't warm up enough to give good winter grip. I ran an ST on the rear of both my hayabusa and my ZZR1100 last year paired with an SP front. The mileage was excellent, getting 3500 miles from the busa and lots more from the 1100 (busa includes drag-racing and 2 high-speed meets that typically wears 1-1.5mm off the tread). I coupled these with Azaro SP front tyres, which give excellent grip, and last easily as long as 2 ST rears.
The ST has a 7mm deep tread pattern that makes the tyre feel like it's moving about a little on the 'busa, but it never bothered me and never let go in a big way even with 175RWHP. I know many 'busa and zx-12r riders who use the SP front/ST rear combination. Many of us buy our tyres from FWR {fwr.co.uk}. At this time of year where the extra grip of the SP is important you might want to consider their "packet of 3" deal. 2 SP rears should easily last as long as an ST, but give better grip with the added cost of an extra tyre change.
