Agree with Rocket in regard to the motivation of the split personality. As Rhino said, sure, it's a traumatic event which sees the personality split in two, but I think the motivation comes from the journey. Why did the personality split, as in what's the other half trying to achieve?

Look at The Machinist. It was his conscience trying to come clean over this crime. The moment he did, he could sleep. This is completely different to the other movies with a similar theme, (although I thought Hide and Seek was just freaking awful).

Ultimately, however, and as I've written elsewhere, the gimmick doesn't bother me as long as it's justified, because what's not a gimmick in a story? Like the hero ending up with the girl. How often's that been done? Or the good guys winning in the end? And so on. Movies are constructed by gimmicks, if you really want to break them down. It's how they're used which defines them.
