Subject: Words cannot acurately convey how good this movie is...
In reply to: Rocket 's message, "United 93" on 20:44:18 04/28/06 Fri

I saw it over the weekend, and I was absolutely amazed.

Now, up front I will remind you that I have a slightly different perspective on the matter, since I am Canadian, but being in Toronto, I am a lot closer to New York than a lot of Americans and we felt the impact of this horrible day almost as badly as Americans did. (I would never claim to have the same emotions on the matter, since I can't imagine how I would have felt if it had been my home country)

All that being said, I have very strong feelings about that day, and can say without a doubt that it changed my life.

The controversy about whether or not it is too soon to be making a movie on this subject, in my opinion, is based around the concern that it would be turned into a Hollywood production, complete with human interest stories, eerie background music, and unnecessary character development. I am thrilled to say that you will not find any of that in this film.

The director did a wonderful job of keeping the focus on the here and now, and not allowing the bigger picture to be shown. There is no mention of Al Qaeda or Osama Bin Laden, there was no reaction from other parts of the country, he didn't show anything outside of the terror of the moment, because that is all that the heros of United 93 were aware of.

The 2nd act of the movie, where the air traffic control centers and military bases were watching the terror unfold in a mass of panic and confusion, just as we all did that day was simply breathtaking.

I really appreciated the fact that he didn't overly develop the characters of the terrorists, since it kept with the theme of not providing the viewer with any more information than the characters had. Also, the fact that the cast did not feature any big name actors, but did feature many people playing themselves helped maintain the suspension of disbelief for the viewer.

Finally, I must agree that "United 93" did a wonderful job of avoiding any type of political commentary on 9/11 and did not pass judgement on anything or anyone...it simply allowed you to revisit the emotions of the day, and provides a little insight into what the passengers of that flight likely went through.

Overall, I don't think this movie could have been done in a more effective way, and it paid wonderful tribute to the passengers of flight 93.

I don't know if anyone would consider nominating a film that is so heavily based on actual events for an Academy Award, but this film deserves to be recognized for it's incredibly realistic portrayal of the pain felt by everyone as we watched in horror that morning, and heroic and inspiring actions of the passengers of United 93, who in my opinion, are some of the greatest heros of all time.

If you were even slightly affected by 9/11...SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You will not regret it.
