So I finally caught this the other night. It's always a bit frustrating to me when a movie is made soley for the sake of the sequel; particularly when there was no guarantee that DMC was even gonna be made. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed DMC, but the whole premise of the movie was to set up the third one. It's like with Star Wars or Back to the Future. The first movies were pretty much self-contained and could've stood well on their own, but when they got the greenlight for a sequel, the second movies were ultimately setups for the third.

That being said, there did seem to be a lot being thrown at the audience in DMC. The whole scenario to get the key that opens the DMC while trying to avoid Davy Jones and the Krakken based on a past debt and the black spot, then the whole entanglement of the East India Trade Company which really wasn't addressed in the film so much as just introduced vaguely. I don't know, I enjoy intricate plots and I'm sure more will be revealed in part 3, but sometimes it seems like it's convoluted for the sake of being convoluted.

As for the action and the humor, once again Depp is hilarious. There's some added depth to his character, but self-preservation still seems his major trait. The life that Capt. Norrington has been dealt after the first PotC is really an interesting story arc and I am curious to see where he goes in the next film. The swordfight on the island involving the waterwheel while everyone chases the DMC is funny and exciting. The whole scene with the cannibals seemed a bit superfluous, but it was still funny. Maybe it cost a fortune to shoot, because it seemed cuttable, but obviously wasn't. There's also some interesting stuff concerning Will and his family and Will and Elizabeth and Jack. I won't go into spoiler details. Also, the cliffhanger ending with the major character reveal literally brought a smile to my face.

It was an entertaining film and also kind of long. Usually when I'm really enjoying a film, it doesn't feel long even when it is. While I was entertained, I was sort of checking my watch near the end.
