Subject: Fox screws Mike Judge again

On this week's Real Time with Bill Maher, he noted that Fox Films abandoned Mike Judge's new finished film, Idiocracy, after test audiences claimed that they "didn't get it." The film was slated for release the last week of September.

I haven't seen this film, obviously, but the plot of the film is as follows: Luke Wilson is a modern day average Joe. Not a genius but not an idiot either. Just average. He signs on to a military experiment that involves placing him in the year 3000 where he discovers that the United States has been so dumbed down by the media and politics that he is actually the smarter than anyone in the country in that new millenium. Maher felt that maybe the test audience didn't understand the film because they were too dumb to do so.

Fox nearly abandoned Office Space because test audiences didn't get it either and Fox felt as if they couldn't market it because of this. The movie bombed at the box office due to this but became a cult classic on video (same with Shawshank Redemption, an all time classic). Here's hoping that a brighter studio will release it and market it appropriately so that Judge, a brilliant writer and director, will finally get his cinematic due.
