Joseph Gordon-Levitt from Third Rock from the Sun continues to do good work as an All American boy who accidentally, yet irresponsibly, crashes his car on prom night, killing two passengers, maiming another and severely damaging his own brain in the process. His brain damage causes him to have short term memory loss, deteriorating motor skills and narcolepsy. Tortured by the accident and his role in it, he struggles day-to-day with his present and future. Feeling he has no other recourse, he's manipulated into helping rob the bank that he works for as a custodian by a group of shotgun wielding ne'er-do-wells (headed by Matthew Goode) and a former stripper (Isla Fisher).

The Lookout is the directorial debut of Scott Frank, screenwriter of the highly underrated Out of Sight. He also wrote this film. It's a heartbreaking, but not sappy look at what tragedy can to do a conscience, especially with negative forces playing havoc. Gordon-Levitt is becoming a fascinating actor, hot off another fragile role in Mysterious Skin. It's nice to see something of substance come off of such a crappy sitcom. Jeff Daniels has a great supporting role as Gordon-Levitt's overly educated blind roommate who tries to steer him in the right direction and is more of a father figure to him than his real father.

I highly recommend this one.
