And quite frankly, I loved it. Which is weird, because I think that a lot of the criticisms of the film are perfectly valid. Yes, it's too long, and yes, there's too much CGI (and strangely, some of Skull Island scenes really don't look great), and yes, some of the action scenes are just way too over the top (Naomi Watts should have had every bone in her body broken given the jarring she took as Kong leaped around and fought dinosaurs while clutching her in his fist).

But in the end I just didn't care, because I totally bought the characters, and Kong himself, who is just about the most lovable monster in the history of monsters. The trick of a film like this is making you forget that the giant ape is just a collection of code in a computer, and I think they did a masterful job of making Kong look and act like a living, breathing creature.

The human actors all gave very good performances, even Jack Black. Adrian Brody always strikes me as an odd leading man, since I think he's a fairly ugly dude, but I know enough women who seem to adore him that I guess I can buy it. Naomi Watts is just gorgeous, and her character in this film is just adorable.

Though some of the Skull Island CGI looked borderline, once the film moved to New York everything was absolutely flawless. The sight of Kong beating his chest atop the Empite State Building is as awe-inspiring as it should be, and his final battle against the fighter planes was both beautiful to look at and quite moving.

I'd give it about an 8.5 out of 10.
