Was perusing this board's archives when I sat this thread, and comments about the Kevin Smith Superman script.

Having once read it, I have to say that I didn't think it was very good at all. I know that Smith was forced to put in some gratuitous action scenes at the behest of the film's producer's (including a fight with polar bears in the Fortress of Solitude), but even thinking that into account I thought the basic pot was just a dud.

Basically, the story was that Luthor and Brainiac teamed up to take out Superman. Step one was the construction of a satellite network that would filter the sun's light, making it red (Superman, of course, gets his powers from yellow solar energy; red sunlight leaves him powerless), and then unleashing Doomsday. As his powers are on the wane, Superman battles Doomsday, and they seemingly both die (which leads to the funeral for Superman, and a really lame cameo where Batman delivers a eulogy via JumboTron). But Superman's body (he was actually just in a deep coma) is removed from his grave by the Eradicator, a Kryptonian robot (not to be confused with the ski mask wearing, racquetball playing character from the Kids in the Hall sketch). Superman then proceeds to spend the majority of the film wearing the Eradicator robot as a suit of armor (because that's what you want in a Superman movie: Iron Man), pondering his role as Earth's protector while trying to get to the bottom of who tried to kill him. Ultimately he figures it out, destroys the satellites, gets his powers back and defeats Brainiac. The End.

I really think that if that script had been made, the film would not have done very well. Superman in power armor is an idea that would have pissed off the hardocre comics fans, and alienated the casual fans who mainly know the character from the Christopher Reeve films.
