But it's my opinion that SNL has never been consistently funny.

Quite a lot of extraordinarily funny, talented people have come and gone in the cast, but Lorne Michaels' stranglehold on the show and the style that he insists on (absolutely no ad libbing, everything clumsily and very obviously read off of cue cards), just kills the ability for these great comedians to really do their thing. Even if you go back and watch the classic episodes and the original cast, there's an awful lot of awkward silence from the audience in between the infrequent big laughs. The fact that they managed to get any laughs in Michaels' system is a testament to just how talented those people were.
