Subject: The Assassination of Richard Nixon

In the mid-70's, before Watergate, a man by the name of Samuel Bycke lost his job, his family, his friends, his faith in the system and ultimately his mind and planned to assassinate the one human being he felt was morally responsible for it all: Richard Nixon. The always captivating Sean Penn plays Bycke in the biopic, The Assassination of Richard Nixon.

It's established early in the film that Bycke is an already troubled soul as he paces around his apartment recording his assassination plans onto a tape for the only man left in the world that he respects, composer Leonard Bernstein. The two have never met but Bycke feels a kinship to Bernstein and his music, thus the unusual connection. Those tapes will be mailed on his way to doing the deed.

We later find out that Bycke had a falling out with his brother that resulted in Bycke losing his stake in the family tire sales business. His wife (Naomi Watts) has separated from him due to his irresponsibility and inability of keeping a job. He's selling office furniture for the sleaziest and most dishonest of bosses and, while he's doing well, he's hating that he is expected to lie for a sale. He witnesses his best friend (Don Cheadle) being the subject of racist treatment on a daily basis. All the while, he envisions himself becoming another victim of a cruel society. It's clear that his intentions are good but the results could be tragic.

Bycke's dream is to win his family back and start up his own mobile tire business. But when a bank loan doesn't come through, Bycke's chain finally snaps and the wheels for Nixon's demise are set in motion.

Penn carries this movie with ease. He's born to play roles like this. With just a small expression on his face or the way he utters a single line, you feel helpless for him. From little things like the boss making him shave off the moustache he grew specifically for his wife to him sitting at his breakfast table contemplating opening the fateful envelope from the bank, you can't help but ache for the guy. It's emotionally exhausting and it's hard to imagine anyone else getting that reaction out of you other than Penn.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
