Subject: Sahara

I wasn't expecting great things out of Sahara, but was still disappointed after seeing it. It just wasn't what I expected. I thought I was getting a historically-based adventure movie, more along of lines of National Treasure, but instead all I got was a convoluted mess of African Civil War and disease with the historical adventure taking a backseat.

Matthew McConaughey plays Dirk Pitt (really a stupid name), the fictional hero of a series of novels by Clive Cussler & Son, a former Navy S.E.A.L. who has gone into the private sector doing water salvaging, all the while pining over his true love: an iron-clad Civil War battleship that may, or may not, have sailed across the Atlantic 140 years and landed in Africa. Assisting him on his journey is right-hand man, Al, played by Steve Zahn. Both are employed by a retired sea Admiral (William H. Macy) who has grown disenfranchised with the U.S. Government and gone into business for himself.

Anyway, Dirk and Al meet up with a doctor from the World Health Organization (Penelope Cruz) who is investigating a potential disease outbreak of unknown origin in a country that has been the been victim of a military coup and is now involved in a Civil War. The leader of the coup has gone into business with a Frenchman (Lambert Wilson) to dispose of African waste (both manufactured and organic) by using Solar energy. However, the process is polluting the land and water, causing the disease outbreak and is threatening to spread across the Atlantic Ocean.

See what kind of bargle-bargle this movie throws at you? Where's the Civil War battleship in the desert? It's practically an afterthought. McConaughey is engaging as the adventure hero, but not as good as he did in Reign of Fire. Cruz is useless. Zahn is always a bright spot and for once he didn't have to act like a clueless boob. He was actually quite serviceable in this picture. Macy is fine, as usual. The rest? Who? What? Where? Why?

Not recommended.
