The very short version review: If you've seen Wes Anderson's previous films (Bottle ROcket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums) and hated them, then no doubt you will hate The Life Aquatic. If you saw those three movies and loved them, well you'll probably love Life Aquatic too.

The story in short: Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) is a famed deep sea explorer, a la Jacques Cousteau (well, if Cousteau had been more than a little shady) who suffers a tragedy when his right hand man and best friend is eaten by the mysterious and legendary Jaguar Shark. Steve vows to return to hunt down and destroy the shark.

While all this is happeneing he also must contend with the crumbling of his marriage (to Anjelica Huston), his wealthy nemesis Alistair (Jeff Goldblum), an antagonistic reporter (Cate Blanchett) and the sudden appearance of a man who may be his long lost son (Owen Wilson).

The comedy in TLA is pretty low key, but there are some extremely funny moments and so many strange quirky things in this film (like a crewman who constantly sings David Bowie songs in French, and Cody, the three-kegged pirate dog) that I sat through it with a smile on my face nearly the entire time.

Definitely one of the better movies I saw in 2004, and highly recommended for those that like this sort of thing.
