I actually saw this at the theatre, but it's been so long ago, I don't quite remember some of the parts you are asking about. I do think the sit in was to show Spader total submission. Overall, I really enjoyed the film and I fell in love with Maggie Gyllenhall.

Spader has been in some kinky-strange films, such as Crash. That's a film about people who find erotic pleasure in car crashes and the injuries and wounds associated with these crashes. VERY odd film.
