I didn't see Pay It Forward but I am familiar with it's story and I would feel comfortable in saying that Secondhand Lions was not milking tears, certainly not in the same vein Forward did. I liked it, my wife liked it, my mom liked it and my 5-year old daughter liked it.

Duvall is excellent. One of the most underrated actors of the last 30 years? Perhaps. I would like to single out his edgy take on "Otto" in Gone In 60 Seconds as a true measure of his acting greatness.

Caine was good, not great. He's not the best at getting rid of the blimey accent of his, for other reference check out The Cider House Rules. Still, the scenes with Duvall and Caine along with Osment are really well done.

I recommend.
