The Phantom Menace really contributes nothing to the story that couldn't have been sufficiently covered in Clones.

Clones should've been Episode One, with Episode Two featuring The Clone Wars and dealing with Anakin's heel-turn. The movie should've ended with Anakin a fully-fledged heel and Amidala discovering she's pregnant (with Luke and Leia). As it is, the Clone War is totally jumped with movie three beginning at its conclusion.

Episode Three should've involved the heel Anakin helping the Emperor kill the remaining Jedi, Obi Wan helping Amidala escape Anakin until Luke and Leia are born, and Yoda setting up on Dagobah.

Of course, it you look at it, the Empire was pretty shitty. In the Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, it's established as this incredibly evil, all-powerful entity. But if you look at the timeline, as being established in The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, it would've only last 20-30 years How weak is that?

Then again, time is a problem with Lucas. If you look at Empire Strikes Back, do you realize Luke gets all his Jedi-training while the Millennium Falcon is flying to Cloud City? The two stories run side-by-side. Now unless that was one helluva long journey, that means Luke must've only trained for a couple of days. He's hardly a Jedi scholar.

I know Lawrence Kasdan wrote that screenplay (which is probably why it's the best of the five movies) but it was based on Lucas's story - and that story involves Luke beginning training with Yoda when the Millennium Falcon begins its journey to Cloud City.
