Subject: Everyone hates it... but I love it!

Has there ever been a movie you thought was brilliant, that everyone else thought was absolutely terrible?

There's one in particular that sticks out in my mind... "The Thin Red Line".

I have yet to find anyone else who enjoyed this movie. I've had a few people tell me it was "alright" but most I've talked to hated it with a passion.

I obviously can't be the only one who liked it, since it was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. However, on a personal level, no one I know liked it.

The people I've talked to didn't like it for two reasons:
A) It was long and boring.
B) It didn't make sense.

I think part of the problem was that the movie came out not long after "Saving Private Ryan". My guess is that people went to the movie, expecting a similar-styled action-filled war movie. To their defense, I believe the movie was somewhat marketed that way.

However, to me, it was an intimate psychological art movie. I didn't feel is was boring, and I thought it made perfect sense. I thought it took a brilliant approach with investigating the deep emotions and motivations of different individuals. I like how it followed one character for a time, so the audience could get to know him, then switched to another. I liked the paralells between nature and war. I thought the acting was superb. Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, and James Caviezel, among others, forced you to buy into their characters and understand exactly where they were coming from. Everything from the cinematography to the soundtrack fit into place, drawing to me into the film's world.

I think it's one of the most creative and innovative movies I've seen. Just curious if anyone else liked it?
