I am in agreement with Joan. Listen, if you take away the basketball courts, tennis courts, etc. then you are telling the kids that they need to find somewhere else to hang out and something else to do. What else do these kids have? If you keep eliminating options for them to do then they will find something non constructive to do such as drugs and alcohol. Am I naive enough to think that none of that is going on? No, I am sure it is. But my point is that these kids have no where to go and nothing to do. The average age for a child in the U.S. to have sex is 12 years old. Average age to start drinking, smoking, and doing drugs is 11 years old. We eliminate options you may stop the Willoughby Station problem for a short time, but you increase the overall problem. Our teenagers are yearning for something more than just themselves. They want something that completes them and makes them happy. That is why they turn to drugs and other substances. Do I have the solution? No, but I can tell you that eliminating options for these kids to turn to forces them to pick up on activities that will only destruct them in the long run.
