I do have to admit the B-17 was one of the best planes in WW2. If it were to be compared to the Lancaster, it would win. To my knowledge the 17 had a speed of 287mph. The Lanc had a max of 286mph. The 17 also had 13 .50 cals but the Lanc had only 8 guns. The 17 also had a bigger fuel tank(s). The Lanc could go a max of 2,527 miles . The 17 could go a max of 3,400 miles. But I do have to admit and so will anybody else that the Lanc had a bigger bomb bay. But fame wise they are a tie. The Lanc was known for their night missions and their "Dam Busting" missions. And the 17 was known for famous daylight bombing raids in to the very heart of Germany. But if you have seen the movie "Memphis belle", you'll find that the ability for the 17 to survive wasn't so much in the 17 but in the very crew that flew those ever so brave and courageous missions in to Germany.
Happy New Year,
Chandler R.
