The Americans used Spitfire MkV as part of the 8th Air Force, stationed in Great Britain, from 1942, simply because of the concern at the USAAF HQ, that the available US type fighters at the time (P39 and P40) were inferior in performance to their expected German adversaries (the new Bf109 and Fw190 variants.)
Mr. Price speaks of 'support duties'.
