Prentice Press - Ottawa Citizen

Susan Riley has written a very straightforward, accurate, and unemotional appraisal of where the candidates are positioned.

I will leave out the commentary she had on Peter MacKay, preferring today to simply highlight the positive remarks in her column.

Its no surprise at all to me that Jim Prentice comes out on top. The Canadian public, I am certain of this - will also react best to Jim Prentice at the helm of our great old party. That is the point.

"Prentice has it right. Wayne's outburst (far worse than anything Stockwell Day has ever said) is not a distraction, or a side issue. It is a timely challenge to the Tory party to differentiate itself from the more socially conservative Canadian Alliance and to the would-be leaders to risk unpopularity by repudiating anti-gay prejudice."

That leaves Prentice - "someone who is earning respectful attention for his moderate, centre-right views and his conciliatory manner. To his supporters, he best embodies the two sides of a venerable party: He is progressive and conservative."

Susan Riley, Ottawa Citizen
