Prentice Unveils His Vision for Canada
OTTAWA, May 24, 2003 - Progressive Conservative Party of Canada leadership candidate Jim Prentice today released a detailed document detailing his vision of the future for both the Party and Canada on various issues Canadians consider to be of top priority.
In addition to Jim Prentice's previously declared positions on the PC Party's restructuring, the party financing bill, defence and education, the document outlines his views on prosperity (taxation, government debt, trade and northern issues), quality of life (health, environment and Aboriginal land claims), Canada in the World (Sovereignty), federal-provincial relations, as well as his thoughts on ethics and democracy.
"Historically, our Party has had success approaching Canadians with clear ideas, coherent priorities and an inclusive attitude," said Jim Prentice, who emphasised that the document contains numerous original and innovative ideas. "The status quo is leading us nowhere as a party, and should not be applied to the ideas we defend as well. To appeal to the imaginations of Canadians in search of change, we must show our colours more clearly," he added.
As for healthcare, Jim Prentice would like to put an end to the gradual transformation of the system toward two-tier medicine. He is committed to federal financing that is more significant, stable and predictable, allowing the provinces a more flexible choice of means and approaches. He is also convinced of the need to concentrate more efforts on protecting the environment, reconciliation with the Aboriginal people and solving jurisdictional conflicts between the provinces and Ottawa.
Jim Prentice also wants to revisit the government's ethics regulations and completely revitalise foreign affairs, which would require an updated international trade policy, as well as new initiatives in diplomatic relations, development assistance and intelligence services.
Finally, Jim Prentice is attempting to put an end to the paternalism and overextension that characterises the Liberal's economic policies. He intends to deregulate, pay off the debt and revisit the way Ottawa supports regional development. "Above all, I intend to free Canadian families from fiscal suffocation. Our government must commit to reducing Canadians' personal income taxes by 15%," he concluded.
The documents may be found on his website at www.jimprentice.org.
