Roger, did you attend Peter MacKay's reception at the Chateau Louis in Edmonton on Monday the 10th? There was a Roger that was there and had the ear of Mr. MacKay for a lengthy period of time; I didn't hear the conversation, I'm just wondering if that was you.
Anyhoo... It's not that I have anything against a farmer or a working man or woman, it's nothing like that. My parents are both regular working people. I don't think that what you call special people are the only ones fit to govern our country. Far from it, I believe that there are people in our country, all across it, that should and could play a part in governing our country. Those are the people I call special.
Just because a person has a University degree or makes a bunch of money does not confer the label of special on anyone; people are "special" by who they are, how they deal with people, their thoughts and actions that go above and beyond those of the majority of people. I believe Mr. MacKay is a special person because of who he is, what he believes in, and how he deals with people. I believe Mr. Orchard is also a special person; he has the ability to articulate the sentiments of a great number of people across the prairies specifically, and across our country as a whole. Both men, and many other men and women like them, are special in a political sort of way.
Roger, you have misinterpreted my comments. I do not believe that the people I mentioned are any more special or any better than anyone else. My point was simply that urban centres are have a much higher proportion of the Canadian population, and that millions of Canadians trust these types of people every day with personal matters that have a much greater effect on a person's life than, say, foreign policy decisions. If people trust those kinds of people with their personal finances and the future well-being of their families, there is no reason why these people could not be trusted to govern our country.
A lawyer or a banker has just as much legitimacy as a farmer does. To say that a farmer is a better representative of the Canadian people today than one of these types of people, or than the other 6 candidates in this race, simply because he is a farmer is invalid. No one person has more legitimacy to represent the Canadian people simply due to their occupation.
