I got halfway through typing a very thorough response to this but FUCKING AOL signed off, so I shall submit a much less thoughtful retort with less in the way of the furnishings of examples and sidenotes:
To Caroline: Yes, I agree that emotions are not based solely on the love and hate instincts. Emotions are based on a whole melange of instincts originally used for survival but now applied to inappropriate social situations. Each individual emotion at any given time is a unique thing, cause by a mixture of our various instincts and chemical characteristics to varying degrees with an attempt to mask it with intellectualism, a usually failed defense mechanism to maintain our intellectual pride. That is what an emotion is, but I simplified it, like Freud, and only explained the two major instincts that affect the region of war, the topic. That is to say, the two major war motivators, Love/Creation and Hate/Kill/Death. And yes, I totally believe emotions are chemical knee-jerk reactions, as that is the most logical conclusion from the information at my disposal. A good rationalist, which I hope I am, must not include any feelings they may have that go against the rational conclusion in the rational conclusion. And to answer the other point, of course society twists and distorts all that we are. If that was not the case, then why do society-distorted humans act completely differently from "savages"? Why do people of different cultures act in different ways and even have different sets of morals? If society didn't imprint those morals and behaviors upon us, then its a pretty big fucking coincidence that so many people in China have a sense of responsibility to elders when so many people in America are rebellious youths, or that such different pacifist/warmonger ratios exist between the people of Iran versus, say Iceland. That's a pretty fucking interesting coincidence, huh? We are society monkeys. Society may be a human invention, but it is a human invention designed by men early on to rule other men by making them feel things they wouldn't through peer pressure. And then with democracy, things just got a whole lot more hectic, but everyone still follows the crowd. Nobody just stands up in class, announces "Fuck this", and proceeds to rape the nearest member of the opposite sex, and plunders the cafeteria, even though that is clearly a more instinctual and, therefore moral, action. Why? Now you know the strength of society. By observing the discrepancies between our close instinctual relatives (ie great apes) and us, the distortion of society becomes uber-apparent. All great apes, and most mammals, for example, are bisexual. It would stand to reason that we would be too. But, because straightness enforces more childbirth and benefits the community, male-male or female-female relations became a taboo. Now, after generations of self-training, you will discover that most "civilized" people find the idea of boning the same sex repulsive, myself included. Woah. See what I mean? Society has fucked us all up a lot more than you think. And don't even get me started on your hatred of science. YOU ARE SO WORTHLESS. THINK HARD BEFORE TALKING.
To BAT: Hey Bryan, maybe I should wait for a time when I disagree to disagree. Originality may be "in", but I just gotta be me.
To Jamyal: Yessir.
