Essay Concerning the Video We Watched “Making Better Babies”

With each technological step forward in the rapidly growing field of genetics, comes an equally important moral issue. Bioethics must be carefully discussed frequently as a caution against this exciting but potentially dangerous area of science. One extremely touchy issue that is quickly becoming a reality is the concept of unnatural selection; learning certain aspects about your baby pre-birth and thus having the ability to customize your child, to an extent.
In this video PBS arranged a discussion concerning this concept of “making better babies”, with about a dozen different opinions covering the moral, legal, medical, and scientific areas of this modern issue. What resulted is a controversial and thought provoking debate. It is obvious there will be an enormous amount of deliberation in years to come and there is still much to be learned about it before any final decision is made.
The discussion is initiated by a hypothetical premise; a late 30’s couple has decided to have a baby but wishes to avoid possible medical problems, such as Down Syndrome which has an increased likelihood in a woman over 35. The test currently available is ‘amniocentesis’, which would offer the parents a screen of genetic defects and warn them of some hereditary disorders such as Downs or Turner Syndrome. The plan is that if results come back positive for such a disorder, the parents have an abortion and try again.
Many are opposed to this trial and error method of ‘playing God’, that it is not within the rights of the parents to decide
