The end of education has changed in the past century. During World War I and World War II the objective was to create a mass of intelligent soldiers to conquer the enemies. Since World War II, the end of education has been most commonly been to train people at a young age so they are capable in the workforce. Throughout the 20th century, to educate a person is to put them in a better position to succeed than another person who is uneducated. Better education means more qualified individuals, whether it means they are prepared and qualified for the military or a job- high school prepares for college and college prepares for the business world.
I feel that education through school is to prepare us so that we can live in the society we have built. As Postman notes, most of our education is not from within the classroom. Instead, it is from what we experience while being with other people. At a young age we learn the basics morals of right and wrong, proper and improper, good and bad. As we grow older and more mature, our experience and knowledge expand while the basics stay the same. We go to school and learn from older, and hopefully wiser people who are knowledgeable in specific areas; math, history, science, language and so on and so forth, but this is not the education that we will use predominantly in our every day lives. This is the information that we use while making money, trying to survive in the system that we have set up for ourselves. For the most part, our schooled education is what our elected superiors have decided is the most valuable and necessary information, but only the most rudimentary information needed for the common person to acquire before immersing themselves in a specific line of work. The teachers within this system aim to engage their students to make the process easier for everybody, and so the information is retained for an extended period of time. The teachers go to school every day to guide the students into making the right decisions, which are the same basic morals that we learned when we were young. These ‘right decisions’ aim to guide the students into a path where succeeding is the only outcome.
Most students are in school not because they wanted to become enraptured with the given information, but because it is the law, or it is what they are ‘supposed to do.’ Every student knows that they are in school because it is the easiest way to succeed in the business world. Most students do not realize that school doesn’t have to mold them into works-in-waiting. Postman explains that school, when used as economic utility ultimately fails. Simply, this means that
